Friday snow in Denver!

Oh no! Snow!   Guess I won't be golfing this weekend.   I left work on Friday night, sure it was cold, but not too bad.  I stopped to grab something to eat and a couple hours later, a winter wonderland.   As I was walking to my car just seemed that a picture would be good.   The woman cleaning the car next to me was doing it for a friend of hers.   Hey I could be her friend, but I did have to clean my car off myself.

Denver Dark Room
Hey, sorry for the delay of a couple of weeks, but the holidays, yeah the holidays, that's what I'll blame. So this past weekend I started a class on lighting, I was refreshed on a number of items this past weekend. I look at it this way, Tiger Woods still takes lessons! The class is provided from Denver Darkroom, check them out, www.denverdarkroom.com. So in the first picture that you see, Kateland Bill listens patiently as photographers study their trade. The second photo shows Kateland, Morgan Weaver and Tori Peterson watch as the instructor arranges the lights. Everyone was watching Richard work, if I could have included everyone in the photo, there would have been 20 people looking in the same direction. I need to be better, dang it.

December 19th. Downtown Denver at Night
Downtown seems to be the theme lately.  Well it is winter and the mountains are not as easy to get to.  Perhaps I'll have a skiing theme soon.   So in downtown Denver there are parts of the streets that have steam coming out of manholes.  So I thought a night shot with that could be interesting.   Oh yes, it was a very cold evening.  Probably around 15 degrees.

On the top left image, you will notice the outline of a car in the steam.  I went to the middle of the road to take this one and as I noticed the light turn green and the cars were getting closer, the shutter stopped and I was able to grab the camera.  Thought the image was pretty neat of the car in the steam. Had a little shake, think I may have touched the camera a litte soon.

The picture on the right was the first I took that evening.  I left the shutter open for 10 seconds and as I was waiting a bus came up and parked, if you look on the left of the picture you can see this.

The final image, my friend Lisa walked up to the steam and I was able to catch her image on the picture.

December 11th 2007 The Fashion Show Charity to Support the fight against MS
Recently I was asked to take photos of a hair and fashion show in downtown Denver.  I was more than happy to volunteer my time to help find a cure for MS.  The show was amazing, very well organized and the venue was packed.  I have never been to a show where people were actually modeling on a cat walk.  The energy was amazing and to hear the cheering was great.

The first photo is of the boots being worn on the stage as the stylist was working on hair of a model.  Just thought the boots looked great and I really like the way ground is out of focus until it reaches the boots.

Then there were the dancers, man the guys could move.  I'd have a headache and a lot less hair if I could do what they did.  Thought the expression on the dancers face was pretty interesting, almost as if he knew I was just about to snap the photo.

Okay, so sometimes something good can come out of a malfunction, my flash was pretty hot as I was trying to take so many photos, well in the third picture the flash didn't work.  So with the one red light that was on above the stage I was able to catch this image.  Thought it was pretty cool.

Next week I'll see if I can put some of the pictures of the models up.

December 5th. Those who cheer and Downtown Denver at night.
Ghostly Image
Rocky

At the Denver Nuggets game on Friday, November 30th I took a number of pictures and found some of the people who cheer on the team to be fun.  The photo of the male cheerleaders carrying the flags during the introductions was a lot of fun.  The guys look like ghosts as they run through the array of lights.

I really like the way the photo of the cheerleader being held up.  The people in the audience are all locked in on her with the exception of a couple of people.  When she comes down the man holding her does an excellent job, if you notice another leg from a cheerleader behind the catch for safety.

Had to get a picture of Rocky as he seems to thrill kids and adults.

Downtown Denver
Took this photo from a friends apartment just west of downtown, still considered downtown.  I didn't have a tripod, so I used a railing once again and set the shutter speed at 1 second with an f-stop at 4.5.  Thank you Canon 40D.
The Denver Art Center Bear
So as I was walking to catch the train home, I came upon a bear roaming downtown.   Okay, so maybe he wasn't real.   I once again was without a tripod so I leaned against a street sign and held as motionless as I could.  This was taken with a 1/5 shutter speed at f 5.6.  Not bad, wasn't exactly warm outside.
November 28th - Snakes and fun with water balloons
Thanksgiving day fun
So in these three photos, I was trying to  catch the balloon breaking and the water staying in place.  In the three pictures you can see just before the pin impacts, at impact and the water falling away.  Thanks to my sister Nancy taking breaks while cooking a delicious Thanksgiving day meal and 1/8000th of a second shutter speed this is what I came up with.  This photo was taken with a Canon 40D.

This photo has, my nephew Jordan's snake, of which you can see under portraits as well is taking a break on the driveway.  I believe he was tasting the camera and not me.  This was taken with my Sony Cybershot using the closeup feature.  This camera also took the bee under the Outdoors page on the website.  Really does a nice job for macro.

November 21st Reflection and lights
The top photo was taken as I was walking along Broadway in Downtown Denver.  The glass building made an erie reflection of the State Capital building.

The second photo was taken just at dark, leaving the shutter open for a couple of seconds, notice the tail lights of a vehicle that passed by when the shutter was open.
November 13th Veterans Day Weekend.
The motorcycles were out in force.
Saturday Morning I decided to go down to the Veteran's Day parade.   Knowing some people who have server in Iraq and knowing many other veterans thought this would be a good thing to do.  Quite an interesting morning, many different people were down, people who were against the war and carrying signs, relatives of military people and many just paying respect.  Was very nice to see the support that community was showing our veterans.  Whether you are for or against the Iraq war, there are many reasons to celebrate the men and women who have server in the armed forces.  WIthout a military we wouldn't have a country, a great place to live and the freedom express how we feel about a war.

To all who have served and are serving.  Thank you.

November 7th, Orange Moon
One night while I was out in the backyard, couldn't help but notice how orange the moon was in the sky.  Had my camera but didn't have a tripod.  So I put the 500 mm lens on my camera set the camera on the deck railing and used a couple of books to point it up to the moon.   Kept the lens opened for just a couple of minutes.  Thought it turned out pretty well and loved the way the color was captured.
November 7th  Ginger the cat
She was sleeping on my bed enjoying the sun beam.  Thought taking a picture of her in the sun might be interesting, so I grabbed the tripod and set the shutter speed to 1/4 and used my 300 mm zoom lens.  Ginger woke up and just looked at me like I was nuts, partially correct.  But the color turned out pretty well and Ginger was no worse for the inconvenience I put her through.

October 31st Photo of the Week - Colorado World Series

The Rockies made it to the World Series and it turned the state of Colorado into a purple haze.  While it seemed the Rockies would not make the playoffs, they turned an amazing winning streak into their second playoff spot.   This turned into a National League Championship.  This photo was taken on Sunday night during game four, a 4-3 loss to the World Series Champion Boston Red Sox.

October 25, 2007 - Family Tradition

There seems to be a lot of family traditions, one of our family traditions happens to be pickling cucumbers, or pickling cucs as my brother calls them.  This year the process took place in Bemidji Minnesota and my brother's family lake home.  The current picture is a jar awaithing the pickling cucs.  My job was stuffing the cucumbers into the jars, which takes skill, trying to figure out how many pickling cucs a jar can handle and what sizes will best fill up the jars.  One must wait three weeks for the pickles to be ready for consumption, of course Eric, my brother feels that one must test them throughout the three week waiting period.
